Mazu is the Chinese goddess of ocean. The legend goes that she originally comes from the Lin Family in Putian, Guangdong province.

The ancestors of the Lin family moved from the North of China to the South in Year 307 AD. Their descendants have served at the court generations after generations. Lin becomes the top number one family name in Fujian and Taiwan.

Mazu’s father is also a high official, and her mother’s family name is Wang. Mazu is the youngest daughter in her family. She has a big brother and five elder sisters.

Before Mazu  is born, her parents worship the gods every day, wishing that they will have one more son. At the night she is born, the neighbors saw a ray of red light shot from the northwest sky, and her hoe looks like on fire. All the people are awed at the sight. Although Mazu turns out to be a baby girl, her parents have a feeling that she cannot be a normal child. So they adore her very much.  The baby has never cried in the first month since she is born, and so she is named “mo”(silent).

Lin Mo is very smart when she is little. She can forecast the weather when she is seven, eight years old. She knows when there will be big windwaves at the sea, and therefore not suitable  to sail out to the ocean. After she grows up, she makes up her mind that she will be engaged in philanthropy all her life, and will never be married.

Lin Mo’s personality is gentle, and she is very warm-hearted. Besides, she knows medicine, too. When people have difficulties, they would go for her, and ask for her opinions and assistance.  Brought up by the side of the sea, Lin Mo is also very good at swimming. Whenever some fishing ships or cargo ships have accidents in the nearby areas, they will often come to get Lin Mo to save their lives.  She is called “ the dragon girl”.

The year when Lin Mo is sixteen, one day her father and big brother go out fishing at the sea. The weather suddenly changes. Lin Mo has the feeling that her father and brother’s lives are at danger this time, and she is so worried that she bursts into tears.  Soon, the storm quiets down a little bit, and Lin Mo rows a little boat out to the sea to look for her father and brother. She saves  her father’s life, but cannot find her brother’s dead body. Therefore, after sending her father back to home, she herself goes out to the sea again, and finally find her brother’s dead body in the massive ocean.

On the ninth day of the ninth month of Year 987 AD, Lin Mo bids farewell to her family, and climbs to the top of the mountain alone.   Music seems to be heard, and a colorful cloud can be seen floating near to pick up Lin Mo to the heaven.

After Lin Mo ascends to the heaven, she often comes to the help of the people in difficulty, and blesses the fishermen out at the sea. It is said that Lin Mo is often seen to change into a red bird to help the people who call for help in danger. Wherever the people traveling by sea arrive, they will build a temple for her. These are the Temples of Mazu.
Comments
Mazu literally means "female ancester".
