伏羲是谁？ Who is Fu Xi?
Fu Xi is regarded as the founder of Chinese civilization. He is also the first king in the documented Chinese history, who reigned for 115 years. As a legendary figure, Fu Xi is the inventor of many things that started the ancient civilization. For example, he taught people how to use fire, how to make clothes from animal skins, and how to record things with symbols instead of knots and ties. But his most important invention is the Diagram of Universe (ba1gua4) with the Yin Yang Fish in the center. This diagram is the basis of Chinese philosophy and Chinese medicine. You can see the diagram on the ground in front of Fu Xi in the painting.
Somebody says he is NvWa's big brother. But somebody says he is NvWa's husband. In fact, he was the chief of a tribe in the Northwest China. Chinese people regard him as our ancestor. As the legend goes, one day, Fu Xi's mom went outside to pick flowers. and saw a giant footprint, so she went forward and stepped in it. She didn't know this was a footprint left by the God of Thunder. So she got pregnant after she got home. Fu Xi stayed in his mother's body for 12 years before he was born.
He was very smart, and invented many things. Once he stood on the high platform and heard the wind from eight directions. Then he noted down the sounds. That became the Diagram of Universe. He also taught people how to keep the fire, which people could cook food by. This probably is related to the fact that he is the son of the God of Thunder. Fu Xi saw spiders spinning webs, so he invented the fishing net. He showed people not only how to fish, but also how to hunt. He also invented the first musical instrument. Therefore, the time when Fu Xi lived is the beginning of Chinese civilization. According to the legend, Fu Xi has man's head and snake's body. Since the snake is the dragon on the ground, Chinese people call ourselves the offspring of the dragon.
